Autumn Family Weekend 2025
This autumn we had a family weekend at our spiritual home at Purley Chase in Atherstone. Amongst the weekend’s fun and games we separated into three groups: the adults, the Year Nine plus, and the youngest group.
We looked at Genesis 16 which tells us an unusual story of a complicated family – it has jealousy, intrigue, arguments, family issues and even angels. After a few sessions with our leaders we showed the others from different groups what we’ve been up to and any conclusions we make. We also look at how it translates to modern times and how we can apply what we have learned to our own lives. Ishmael’s life told us many lessons! We share these with each other on Sunday morning.
After we have finished our group sessions with our leaders we show the others from different groups what we’ve been up to and any conclusions we have come to.
We show our arts and crafts too. The teenage and youngest group did lots of different craft activities, and enjoyed showing them to everyone during the service on the last day. Some amazing clay models were made that far exceeded any of our expectations. We made some clay wells as they were mentioned in the story and they represent deep spiritual truths. The leaders learned a valuable lesson that day – don’t over instruct! Let the people’s imaginations lead the way! We were frankly amazed how good the crafts were, especially as they were left to their own devices in design and creation. There were also colourful lanterns made too!
Fun, food and games
Also over the weekend there was a bonfire which we had to pre burn to get rid of the more soggy wood, but it is that time of year – autumn – and is England. There was a surplus of marshmallows for sports. Dieters beware!
The pumpkin decorating was enjoyed by all. Some of the young adults decided that they were going to ask the kitchen staff for knives and did some fantastic carving.
Let’s move on to food. On the Friday evening when we first arrived we had a nice buffet style dinner. After this we introduced ourselves so any new people at least know a few names. We mentioned where we’re from as we live all over the UK.
We had games and quizzes on the Saturday evening to keep the children and adults amused. This time it involved searching Purley to find names of characters.
On Saturday after a lovely tea we had a sing song around the bonfire and then lit sparklers. Well, it was that time of year! Friendships were made and others were cemented.
Big thanks to the staff at Purley for looking after us so well, and to all those who led groups. Thanks to Robert for this write-up, and to Alison, Jenny, Shannon and Becky for photos.
