9-13 Summer Camp is held at Wellspring House in July-August.  It tends to be held the at the same time as the 13-18 camp at Purley Chase Centre.  This year 9-13 Summer Camp is from 2 pm on Monday 3rd August – 11 am on Thursday 6th August.

During the day, there are sessions in the morning where we have discussion and activities based on a Bible story.  In the afternoons we go out and explore the local area!  There are trips to Heaton Park, a park close to Wellspring House, and we sometimes have a guided walk of the local area.

If the weather isn’t so good, there are plenty of other activities to do.  There is a table tennis table, and we have endless games to share with the young people.

On 9-13 Summer Camp we also go on a larger trip that fits the theme of the camp.  In the past we have been to the home ground of Manchester United, Inflata Nation, The Chill Factore, and the Crocky Trail.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

This year we will be looking at aspects of the first Harry Potter book.  We will watch the film to make sure that everyone knows what is going on.

There are many ideas in the book that fit with New Church teaching, and we will explore some of them.  A major theme is the power of love over evil, and we will think about how this relates to our everyday lives.

We will also think about friendship.  When do we stand up for what is right, even though it may upset our friends?  We can also help our friends by using courage to choose the good and stand by each other.

Which house do you think you would end up in?  We will discuss the Sorting Hat and how at age 11 our minds and hearts are not formed enough to be “sorted” in that way.

These themes help us remember that love, kindness, and seeing with spiritual eyes are real magic in our everyday lives!
